Alistair Young is an admitted attorney who completed his tertiary education at the University of Cape Town where he obtained a BA degree specialising in environmental science, a LLB degree, and a Master’s degree specialising in International and South African Environmental Law. His LLM dissertation focused on the negative impacts of large dams on the environment and the curtailment of such impacts through the application of relevant international environmental conventions and indigenous environmental legislation.

Peggy Schoeman BA LLB PDM LLM (cum laude)

Associate – Warburton Attorneys

Peggy Schoeman is an admitted attorney, conveyancer and notary. Peggy obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with a triple major in Law, Politics and German in 2007 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2009, both at Rhodes University. In 2010 she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PDM) at Wits Business School and in 2013, she completed a Master of Laws (LLM) in commercial law at Wits University, with distinction. In 2012 Peggy clerked for Judge Kathleen Satchwell at the High Court, Gauteng Local Division where she was tasked with doing research on a variety of cases as well as running her Judge’s chambers and court.

Peggy completed her articles of clerkship at a medium-sized commercial law firm in Sandton and was appointed as an associate in the environmental department in 2014. As an associate, Peggy worked on a number of environmental-related matters ranging from advising on environmental legal compliance, conducting environmental due diligence investigations, compiling environmental, health and safety legal registers and conducting legal research and drafting opinions.

Peggy joined Warburton Attorneys in May 2017. She provides legal advice on a wide range of environmental issues, including inter alia environmental authorisation requirements, environmental civil and criminal liability, water use law, waste management, contaminated land issues, air quality, greenhouse gas emissions reporting, mining-related impacts, protected areas law and heritage resources. She also conducts environmental legal compliance audits, compiles appeals with respect to environmental authorisations, section 24G fines, compliance notices and directives, reviews and drafts environmental provisions in commercial agreements and runs workshops on various developments in environmental and mining law.

Marga van der Merwe LLB LLM

Associate – Warburton Attorneys

Marga van der Merwe obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2012 and a Master in Laws (LLM) in Environmental Law and Governance at the North West University in 2015. She has also completed a short course in environmental management and regulation and attended a Transboundary Protection of Biodiversity Summer School whilst completing her LLM. Marga was admitted as an attorney in September 2015 and a notary public in March 2017.

Marga completed her articles of clerkship at Tim du Toit & Co Incorporated in Pretoria in the High Court Litigation and Labour Law Departments, where after she was appointed as a professional assistant at a general law practice in Pretoria. As a professional assistant, Marga mainly gained experience in commercial law matters ranging from the drafting of and advising on contracts, company secretarial work and also general High Court litigation matters specifically related to mining.

Marga joined Warburton Attorneys in June 2017. She provides advice on environmental, health and safety and mining related legal matters. She also works on the Safety, Health and Environmental Legal Registers for the South African market as well as for other African countries and conducts training and marketing sessions on the Legal Registers.

Candidate Attorney – Warburton Attorneys

Obeid Katumba obtained a National Diploma in Nature Conservation in 2005, a Bachelor of Laws degree with an Environmental Law elective (LLB) from UNISA in 2014 and completed his Practical Law Training (PLT) through the Law Society of South Africa. Obeid has recently completed his Master of Laws Degree in Environmental Law (LLM) through the North West University.

Obeid worked as an environmental education officer for Ubungani Wilderness Experience in 2006 and gained experience in environmental teaching before joining the Southern African Wildlife College in 2007 as a skills development and short course coordinator. Obeid joined the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) in January 2008. During his time at GDARD, he served as biodiversity officer within the biodiversity management unit. He performed various scientific and ecological tasks, and gained experience in the management and monitoring of natural ecosystems. Obeid also worked as an enforcement officer, where he was trained and designated as an Environmental Management Inspector (EMI Grade 2). He gained valuable experience in environmental enforcement, investigations, monitoring of compliance with legislation and authorisation conditions as well as in criminal and administrative enforcement mechanisms. He commenced work at Warburton Attorneys in February 2017 as a Candidate Attorney and assists with a range of environmental and health and safety legal matters.
